The Day Pudsey Bear Popped In!

Colleagues at Mini-Cam’s UK Headquarters in Golborne recently enjoyed a short break from production when Pudsey Bear called in for a tour of the factory. The ever popular, larger than life size teddy bear is the mascot of BBC TV’s UK Charity ‘Children in Need’, and was most grateful to receive generous donations from Mini-Cam colleagues in all departments. Created by BBC graphic designer Joanna Lane in 1985, the bear was named after her hometown of Pudsey, West Yorkshire, where her grandfather was Mayor. Pudsey posed for photos with colleagues and helped to sell raffle tickets, which together with donations from other neighbouring businesses on Stonecross Park raised an impressive £372.77 in aid of the charity. The first Children in Need telethon was broadcast in 1980, the format was developed throughout the 1980s to the point where the telethon segments grew longer and the regular programming diminished, eventually being dropped altogether from 1984 in favour of a single continuous programme. This year’s final total raised was £47,886,382, since 1980 Children in Need has raised over £1 billion for disadvantaged children and young people in the UK.
